Patrick and Shelly’s Story: How to Build Your Home Right and Cost-Effectively, Without the Worry of Future Renovations

November 21, 2019

Patrick and Shelly had built a home once before, but that was in a community development, and, quite frankly, not really what they wanted. They longed for more land with abundant privacy and found their little piece of heaven in Clinton, Ohio on a stunning 6-acre lot near the Ohio-Erie Canal Towpath, complete with a stream and friendly wildlife. Location secured, their time to research home builders had begun.

Shelly and Patrick are the type who never make a purchase without first researching to be sure they are getting the best product on the market, and of course, with an investment like a new home, they dug twice as deep into the process. Be it resale value, warranties, costs, base models, customizations, or reviews of individual builders and New Home Consultants to understand who previous customers have enjoyed working with, Shelly and Patrick did their due diligence and came to the conclusion that Schumacher Homes was the team for them.

Once Patrick and Shelly sat down with their New Home Consultant in the Akron office to go through Schumacher Homes proprietary FrontDoor™ custom homebuilding pricing system (our pricing system was awarded the 2019 Gold Award for "Best Digital Sales Tool/Use of Technology" from the National Association of Home Builders), it was instantly clear that they had made the right decision. There was so much included in the new home, and FrontDoor™ spelled out everything, line item by line item, with no hidden costs. They knew building with Schumacher Homes was it and that was that, with Patrick describing the process in one word, “awesome.” After scribbling down all of their wants and needs for a new home, Patrick and Shelly decided upon the Abernathy house plan, but of course, with a few customizations to not only make it their own and but to capitalize on the prime real estate of their incredible property.

To take advantage of the sweeping, picturesque views, they added a walkout basement with a massive porch where they could enjoy the stunning year-round views of Northeast Ohio - from perfect azure skies to driving snow. Shelly also helped design the ultimate relaxation area within the house by adding a massive soaking tub, which has now officially become the envy of all of her sisters and nieces.

Patrick let Shelly do the majority of the custom design selections for their home, as she is “the one with an eye for design and space,” but ultimately, the greatest piece of advice that they got from their Sales Coordinator was to “do it now.” Whatever they were thinking about, add it to the list and make things perfect.

Hot Tip: Construction is a process. If there is an addition that you want in your new home, get it done during the building process as it’s unlikely you’ll end up finding the time to go through the effort and greater expense later.  Start with the items you can’t easily change later.

Shelly and Patrick chose to add ceiling design, trim details, their walkabout basement, the expansive porch, and several other custom touches during initial construction, which led to their home being ideal from the start rather than leaving them with a long to-do list of major projects. According to Patrick, throughout the entire process there was truly a team commitment between him, his wife, and their New Home Consultant with fantastic communication all around. There was never a moment when someone from the team felt out of the loop.

Thanks to Schumacher Homes, they were able to move into their home and focus on watching the idyllic sunsets from their new porch on the very first day. Patrick felt so positive about the experience that he shared his story at one of our Meet The Builder events.
