I, (NAME), do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God.
This is the oath that all enlisted service men and women take, and the officer’s oath is very similar. The first two line are identical. I remember taking this oath a little over 40 years ago and I have to say that at that time, being right out of high school, they were just words that I was told to repeat with my right hand raised. But it was not long after that changed, and the words of that oath started to take on meaning.
That I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States. To me that means our way of life, the American people who enjoy that way of life and America, the land where we enjoy our way of life. The individuals that take this oath gave a portion of the lives, and unfortunately too many gave their lives, to ensure that our way of life has and will continue to be protected. I feel proud to be one of the millions of Veterans over the history of our country that supported and defended our Constitution of the United State.
This Veterans Day thank a Veteran for their past service to our county, thank an active duty soldier for their current service to our country, thank a family member or members of an active duty soldier for the sacrifice that they are making in support. Those two little word can have a huge impact on someone’s day, and trust me you’ll feel pretty good yourself.
