Multigenerational Living Design

Multigenerational living, which is a household of family members (close relatives or extended family) from different generations living under one roof, is increasing in popularity. Today 64 million Americans live in a multigenerational home.  Families are able to spend more quality time together, often in a more comfortable, convenient setting, and with added affordability compared to separate households. For some families, the economy has meant moving in together to afford a home.  Others see lifestyle solutions in a custom home that brings families together for daily engagement and still keeps spaces for seclusion and independence.

Our multigenerational house plans provide the privacy and flexibility that make living separately, but together truly enjoyable and harmonious. Communal spaces such as the great room or spacious kitchen bring your loved ones together.  Meanwhile private bedrooms or suites offer privacy.

Your New Home Consultant will work with you to customize and adapt our house plans to your needs. They can suggest solutions as idea starters based on common multigenerational customizations we make.

Multigenerational living house plans help accommodate:

  • Adult children moving back home after college
  • Caring for aging parents or grandparents that need to be close, but still independent
  • Live-in parents who assist with childcare
  • Family members who visit for extended periods of time
  • Adult child with special accommodations

Happy Family

Multigenerational Home

There are many options, that can be customized, to fit your living situation.  Multiple "owner's retreats" of varying levels can be considered as a mother in-law suite.  Regardless, separate entrances can increase independence for families sharing the home and are growing in popularity.  And of course, spacious common areas become the heart of the house where everyone comes together.

Dual Master Floor Plan

Many homeowners opt for simpler solutions that may be less permanent, costly, or smaller in additional square footage. Some have added Junior Suites which include a closet and private full bath with a little extra room. Or simply enhancing an existing bedroom with extra space or a direct entrance to the bathroom. Transforming a loft space or a bonus room into an additional bedroom is also a popular customization.

A second owner's retreat offers an extra bedroom, full bath, walk-in closet and enough breathing room to make the space feel secluded and peaceful, while still giving the proximity and convenience of being attached to the main home. If needed, a second Owner's Retreat can also include a sitting room, kitchen area and laundry room.

A Casita is a private second dwelling usually attached to the main house by a covered porch or walkway. A Casita typically consists of a spacious great room, kitchen area, laundry room, bedroom complete with a full bath and walk-in closet, private entrance and sometimes a separate garage area. With this addition, finding peace and quiet when you want it is as easy as walking to the other side of the house to a whole other home.
